Powerlifting measures three lifts — squat, bench press, and deadlift — for maximum weight. Bodybuilding is judged on muscle size, symmetry, and conditioning. How Powerlifters Train
Powerlifters train for strength. The goal is simple: lift the heaviest weight possible for one rep in three specific lifts. The Mistake: Sticking to One Range
The biggest misconception is that powerlifters should never train in the 8-12 rep range, and bodybuilders should never go heavy. Both are wrong. The best physique athletes include heavy compound work — squats, deadlifts, and heavy rows — because mechanical tension is the primary driver of hypertrophy. The best powerlifters include hypertrophy phases (higher reps, moderate weight) to build muscle mass that supports heavier loads later.
A powerlifter who only trains 1-5 reps develops strength but misses the muscle-building stimulus that higher reps provide. A bodybuilder who never trains heavy misses the neural adaptations that improve motor unit recruitment and power output.
